Spring 2009 CSA

Newsletter January 30, 2009

This week was normal, weather wise, for late January here at the farm with outside lows reaching near 25F a few mornings. Towards the end of the week, the sun finally broke out which pleased everyone, especially our plants. Our soil temperature is near 50F, so a lot of our field greens are growing r-e-a-l slow, which is why we will not have any baby arugula at the Farmer’s Market this weekend. Inside our hoop houses the tomato, broccoli and napa cabbage plugs are looking great. The cauliflower does not like our germinating methods using bottom heat, so we are going to try something different. We seeded our first peppers this week, Corno Di Toro red and yellow, along with some cayenne for you heat lovers. We’ve grown the Corno Di Toro Italian peppers for several years and have found that they have the flavor of bell peppers, but are a little more productive. More tomatoes are being seeded every week. The banana potato fingerlings are already sprouting and ready to go in the ground, but it is still a tad early and very dry.

We received our strawberry plants earlier this week and plan on getting them planted this Monday or Tuesday, weather permitting. Hope to get some beets and carrots going in the ground this week as well, but would like to have a better forecast for rain prior to doing so.

FYI, we think we have remedied the problem that some of you were having when viewing a few of the pages at the woodduckfarm.com website. So if you had a problem, please consider revisiting our website.

We still have shares available, so please let your friends know.

At the Bayou City Farmers Market this Saturday, Jan. 31st, we will have the following:

  • Baby Salad Mix
  • Micro Arugula
  • Micro Cilantro
  • Micro Green Blend
  • Whole Smoked Chickens
  • Pulled Pork
  • Chicken Salad, No Mayo

Busy days ahead. Until next time,
