Join Us to Celebrate Our Spring Harvest

Our dinners are prepared using locally grown products, many of which you’ll discover first hand when you tour our farm. The combination of great food, new acquaintances and a beautiful outdoor setting always proves to be a rewarding experience. Our featured guest chef will be the talented and nationally recognized Bryan Caswell, co-owner and Executive Chef of several Houston area restaurants which include Reef and Stella Sola. Some of Bryan’s culinary accomplishments include being named Top 10 Best New Chef by Food & Wine Magazine, James Beard Award Nominee Best Chef / Southwest 2011 & 2010, #1 Seafood Restaurant in the U.S. by Bon Appetite Magazine. Some of you may have witnessed Bryan’s national television debut as a viable competitor in the 2011 Iron Chef Series on the Food Network Channel.

How Does it Work?

Everyone is welcomed at the “old school house” for a reception and appetizers until all have arrived. We begin with a guided tour of our farm that lasts approximately 45-60 minutes. Guests then return to the “old school house” for dinner served outside, family table style. If you wish to sit together, please let us know when you arrive so that we can make arrangements. Coffee, filtered water, herbal tea, wine and beer are to be offered with dinner. Wish to bring your own beverages? That’s okay too. In the event of rain on the day of the event, dinning will be inside, but the farm tour will still be available those wishing to see the farm. We do not recommend that you bring young children as this is an event geared to adults. To secure your reservation, please visit our website at the link below or drop by our tent at the Urban Harvest Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings located on Eastside. You can use any major credit card or your Paypal account, as well as pay by cash or check. You will be kept abreast of the farm dinner via emails. Directions to the farm can be found by going to this page.

What will CSA members receive?

Subscribe in advance to ten weeks of fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables from Wood Duck Farm, nestled in the Sam Houston National Forest north of Houston. Three choices are currently offered: a weekly Full Share, a weekly Partial Share, and a Full Share every other week (Alternate Week Full Share). An example Full Share is shown in the image at the right; Partial Shares typically include the same items, but about a third less. Our farm grows several produce varieties and will strive to give members the best quality produce possible. CSA members will receive at least 5 to 8 different types of vegetables, fruits, and herbs each week during the CSA growing seasons. The amount and selection of produce in each share is largely dependent on what our soil yields, and will vary from week to week. Your diet will reflect the season and the land. Given the prospect of adverse weather and crop failures, we may from time to time supplement member shares with local produce sustainably grown within 180 miles of our farm. Examples include Ruby Red grapefruit, East Texas blueberries, and satsuma oranges.

For our Spring CSA we are planting varieties such as Sweet Corn, Cucumbers, Green Beans, Kale, Tomatoes, Okra, New Potatoes, Arugula, Basil, Peppers , Eggplant, Salad mix, Garlic, Summer Squash, Dill, Zucchini, Summer Onions, Tomatoes, Micro Greens, Cantaloupe, Honey Dew, Peaches, Blueberries, and Watermelon.

Our Spring CSA will run for ten weeks. Once the harvest begins, members will pick up their produce at various distribution points located in and around Houston. (Please view the Pick-Up Locations page for delivery times and days near you.) Shares not retrieved during pick-up hours will be donated. Concerned about forgetting? Not to worry; we’ll remind you via email. In fact, when joining Wood Duck Farm’s CSA program you agree to read our email communications as soon as you see them—we don’t want you to miss receiving your share!

How are shares picked up?

Pick-up locations are at businesses and private residences throughout the Houston area. To retrieve your share, first find your name on the pick-up list and write your initial along side it. (If you do not find your name, we have not packed a share for you; please contact us so we can address the problem.) Note the type of share you have ordered, then select a box labelled with a “P” (for Partial Share) or “F” (for Full Share). Place your share in the bag, box, cooler, or crate you brought, then break down the box and stack it adjacent to the boxed shares. The boxes will be used for delivery again. If you take a box home, please return it to your pick-up point the next week. Out of courtesy to our wonderful hosts, please keep to the designated pickup times. Shares not retrieved during pickup hours will be donated.

What is the cost?

Spring CSA prices are $330 for a Full Share ($33/week) and $240 ($24/week) for a partial share delivered weekly over the ten-week program. Our Alternate Week Full Share allows customers to skip every other week, providing shares over six alternating weeks for $180 ($36 every other week). If there are shares remaining, prices will be prorated for those joining the CSA once the ten-week season has begun. Please give us a call if you have questions about your order.

Communications from Wood Duck Farm

Those participating in the CSA program agree to open and read all e-mail communications from us as soon as they are noticed. Communications will include information regarding CSA start dates, pick-up reminders, special events, share instructions, and information regarding changes or delays in deliveries due to traffic, inclement weather, holidays, or changes in pick-up location.
CSA stands for Community-Supported Agriculture. CSAs are a very popular on the west coast, upper Midwest, the northeast and now in parts of Texas. CSA programs have become a great alternative for obtaining high quality food from a trusted local farm.

Being a member of our CSA means that each week you get to pick up a box of delicious, freshly harvested herbs and vegetables that is representative of that week’s farm bounty. This is a win-win arrangement as this program provides the member with

An opportunity to participate in our farm and in local, sustainable farming.
